Key Opinion Leaders
A opinion leader is an active speaker, communicator or commentator who interprets often complex messages for other people. Oftentimes an opinion leader is held in high esteem, meaning that his / her messages are considered as reliable and factual. Key opinion leaders (KOL) are those people who are recognized and followed by a large number of other people. Good examples are:
- Industry analysts from Gartner, Forrester, IDC...or other market research organizations
- key journalists covering your field of activity working for large media (the national press, key websites)
- key politicians showing an active interest in your business
Whichever sector you are working in, keeping an eye on what your industry specific KOL are talking about can help you to identify strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats.
How to track what KOL are talking about
The first step is to create a list (or lists) of the KOL for your sector or area of interest.
Using this and a query you can create a bar chart that shows the number of articles citing them or written by them.
Here is an example based on KOL for diabetes.
If you want to go a step further, you can combine the KOL list with a list of key subjects that you would like to focus on.
You can then create Digimind analysis based on these two lists.
Here is one created using a list of diabetes KOL and important diabetic healthcare themes:
You can run this type of analysis on any type of Digimind graph that uses two lists (for more details please follow this link).
